What is the Left Lane For Anyway?

TRANSCRIPT:

Hi, I’m Attorney Ben Schwartz.

Today, I want to ask you a question. What do you think about people that cruise in the left lane?

I think that the left lane is for passing. I don’t think everyone realizes this, so a lot of people will just cruise along in the left lane and block traffic. This forces people to go into the right lane just to keep moving.

I read an article on FOX5 out of Atlanta, Georgia. Several states, like Virginia and Oregon, have bills pending in state legislatures. These new laws would impose a fine of $250 on anyone who just sits in the left lane and clogs up traffic. I think this is a good idea. When someone sits in the left lane (even if they’re driving the speed limit), they are blocking people who might be going faster. This forces those people to switch lanes unnecessarily. Any time you shift lanes, there’s a danger that you’ll hit someone in your blind spot and cause a car accident. As a safety measure, I think it’s just a good idea.

I’m interested to know what you think. Do you think there should be a fine in Delaware, Maryland or Pennsylvania for people who sit in the left lane and block the flow of traffic?  Let me know what you think. Post in response to this video or post a comment. You can also send me an email below.

Thanks for tuning in and watching this video!
