Why Should I Carry Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage?

TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Attorney Ben Schwartz.

Today, we’re going to answer a car accident question from Heath in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Heath wrote, “I was in a car accident I have a thousand-dollar deductible for collision coverage. My car was really damaged. It turns out that the driver that hit me ran a red light but did not have any insurance on her vehicle at all. Is there anything I can do to get my car fixed without paying that $1,000 deductible?

The answer is maybe. What you need is the declarations page on your auto insurance. Take a look and see when you bought the policy. Did you buy uninsured motorist property damage insurance? You can have your car fixed, just not under your collision coverage but under your uninsured motorist property damage provision. You probably have no deductible on that. This coverage would get your car fixed and not require you to pay anything out of pocket. Look into your policy and find out if you have it.

I’m Attorney Ben Schwartz. I hope that answers your question, Heath. I hope you have uninsured motorist property damage coverage and don’t end up a thousand dollars out of pocket.

If you have questions for me about personal injury cases: auto accidents, slip-and-fall cases, dog bites, and more… send me an email!

I hope you find this informative and useful.
